About the Exhibition
Harvey's quilt exhibition exuberantly demonstrates his personality and activism, exploring themes of self-expression, joy, fear, oppression, community, identity, and memory. The textiles reflect some of his artistic influences – R.C. Gorman, Matisse, Josephine Baker, Warhol, Klimt, Modigliani – with a mindful nod to the American tradition of quilt-making and in cooperation with today’s quilt-making community. The quilts feature striking imagery, with vivid colors depicting a variety of bold patterns and scenes: self-portraiture, nudes, landscapes, drag, ‘doodles,’ and more.
Harvey Fierstein is best known as a seven-time Tony Award-winning actor and playwright but, as this exhibition will attest, he is also a visual artist. Recipient of this year’s Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement, Harvey is best known for his stage work on HAIRSPRAY, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, NEWSIES, KINKY BOOTS and TORCH SONG TRILOGY. Audiences are also familiar with film appearances in MRS DOUBTFIRE, INDEPENDENCE DAY and MULAN. He attended NYC’s High School of Art and Design and holds a BFA from Pratt Institute. Harvey’s autobiography, I Was Better Last Night, is a NY Times best seller.
