Compassion in Action: Make a Shelter a Home background

How it Works

Make a Shelter a Home

Thank you for your desire to help turn a shelter into a home. Because of your Compassion in Action, our new shelter will be a place of safety, comfort, and dignity for those who need it most.

You are invited to select the room or family apartment suite of your choice. Each space offers a meaningful way to directly impact the experience of someone seeking safety.

Once you’ve made your selection, you will receive a follow-up email with a detailed list of needed items and simple next steps.
To give you a general idea, items may include bedding, towels, bathroom essentials, decorative pillows, wall art, and other thoughtful touches that help make the space feel warm and welcoming. Family apartment suites also include a kitchen and will require basic kitchen items. (Detailed lists are below if you need this prior to making your choice.)

This is a wonderful project for a family, business, organization, or neighborhood group to take on together.

Decor Guidelines

To ensure all spaces are consistent and ready for use, please note the following:

  • Rooms may not be painted or altered in any way
  • All furniture is provided and should remain in the room
  • Sponsors are responsible for bringing décor, linens, and essential items only
  • Please do not nail or attach items directly to the walls; command hooks and adhesive strips will be provided
  • All décor should be family-friendly in color and theme, and appropriate for individuals of all ages, especially children (ensuring it's washable and durable - NO Dry Clean Only Fabrics)

Decorating Your Space

Each sponsoring group is invited to come in and decorate their assigned room or suite in person, helping create a space that feels comfortable, welcoming, and cared for.

Decorating Schedule:
Monday, June 1 through Thursday, June 4
Available each day between 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM

These are the times available for decorating. You may choose any day and time within this window that works best for your group.

You may complete your decorating in one visit or spread it out over multiple visits during the week—whatever is most convenient for you.

During your visit(s), you will bring the items you have purchased and set up your space.

Special Preview Invitation

As a thank you, all participating groups are invited back for a special Happy Hour First Look of the decorated spaces.

Date: Friday, June 5
Time: 5:30 PM

This will be your opportunity to walk through the space, see the rooms and apartments fully set, and experience the impact of what you helped create. You’ll be able to see how each group’s contributions have come together to transform our shelter into a place of comfort, dignity, and care.

Light refreshments will be provided as we gather to celebrate this collective effort and the community that made it possible.

This special preview takes place just weeks before we officially open our doors at our Ribbon Cutting on June 25, 2026, in celebration of the Crisis Center of Comal County’s 40th anniversary.
