MACLA is proud to honor two extraordinary individuals whose dedication, creativity, and commitment to community have left a lasting impact on our organization and beyond.
Bob Brownstein, Arts & Justice Awardee
A steadfast advocate for social justice and equity, Bob Brownstein has been a guiding force at MACLA for nearly three decades. As our longest-serving board member, with 27 years of leadership and service, Bob has helped shape the organization’s vision and strengthen its role as a cultural anchor. His lifelong commitment to justice and community empowerment continues to inspire all who work alongside him. Most recently, he has taken up painting and has a work featured in this year’s exhibition.
Viviana Paredes, Artist Awardee
Visual artist Viviana Paredes has maintained a deep and enduring relationship with MACLA for the past two decades, contributing to its vibrant artistic community. Using glass and organic materials, she creates sculptures and installations that reflect a powerful voice rooted in cultural expression and storytelling. Her work is in the permanent collection of several notable institutions, including The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture and the AltaMed Art Collection. In celebration of her artistic achievements, MACLA is honored to present a solo exhibition featuring newly commissioned work supported by the highly competitive Creative Work Fund, opening September 4, 2026.
Come ready to celebrate in style! The evening will take place outdoors, so we recommend bringing layers as it can get chilly and windy. We’ll have outdoor heaters and cozy sarape blankets available, but an extra layer will help you stay comfortable all night long.
Q: Will there be food and drinks?
A: Yes! We’ll be serving heavy appetizers along with beer, wine, sodas, and sparkling water throughout the evening. Looking for somewhere to eat before? We suggest an early dinner reservation at Mezcal.
Q: Where can I park?
A: The closest lots to MACLA are the I-280 Lot and the San Jose Convention Center Lot. For additional details on parking visit parksj.org or view our interactive event map here.
