About the Lyman Museum

Rooted in partnership and perseverance, the Lyman Museum safeguards Hawai‘i’s living history—honoring the communities that strengthen our shared legacy, ensuring it flourishes for generations. Founded in 1931, the Lyman Museum stands as Hawai‘i Island’s flagship cultural institution, safeguarding the archipelago’s layered history—from Polynesian voyagers to modern-day traditions. What began as a modest collection has flourished into a living narrative, housing over 16,000 artifacts, specimens, and archival treasures that weave together the islands’ multicultural legacy.

Today, we are:

  • The only museum in Hawai‘i offering a complete historical journey under one roof.
  • A vital educational hub for schools, researchers, and global visitors.
  • Recognized as the “Best Museum in East Hawai‘i” and “the gem of Hilo” for our immersive exhibits and renowned Island Heritage Gallery.

Our Mission:

To ignite curiosity and connection through the preservation, education, and celebration of Hawai‘i’s natural and cultural heritage—bridging past and present for all who call these islands home.

Your support makes it possible for the Museum to fulfill its mission to “tell the story of Hawai‘i, its islands, and its people.”  We are accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and are also a Smithsonian Affiliate.
