Women Supporting Women Veterans
The Lettermen of the USA’s Red, White and Bingo flyer has been modified to emphasize “Women Supporting Women Veterans,” and it now states that proceeds will go toward supporting Women Veteran programs.
That focus matters here at home. Alabama is home to more than 43,000 women veterans—about one in every ten veterans in the state. Yet only about 18,500 are enrolled in VA health care, and just over 14,000 received care in the most recent year reported.
Women veterans are also overrepresented among those in crisis. They make up about 11 percent of Alabama’s veteran population, but roughly 13 percent of homeless veterans. Nationally, homelessness among women veterans rose nearly 24 percent from 2020 to 2023 even as overall veteran homelessness declined.
These are the women this night is meant to honor and help.
