Partnering in education & equipment to prevent needless death in Africa.
The goals of Africa Partners Continuing Medical Education are to:
What we do:
APM provides comprehensive updates in clinical medicine through didactic teaching on a broad range of the most preventable and prevalent diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, cancer, HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.
We also deliver practical training in medical procedures for health care personnel through workshops on such topics as basic and advanced life support, medical procedures in pediatrics, obstetrics, endoscopy, abdominal and obstetric ultrasounds, and breast and cervical cancer screening.
Young Doctors & Nurses Conference
Annually we host an in-person training conference taught by volunteer faculty both doctors and nurses from Mayo, Rochester, The Mayo Health system, and hospitals in Ohio, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, England and several faculty from Ghana. All faculty not only give of their time, but also pay their own way there and back. We had our first in person conference in 3 years, due to the pandemic, last March and over 100 doctors and nurses attended. The conference is held in a retreat setting, away from the demands of their jobs and everyday lives. The goal is to partner for generational change in medicine in Africa. Intensive training is done, and the faculty significantly influence the practice knowledge and habits of the newer health care providers, who will ultimately train the next generation of doctors and nurses. Our goal is to train 150 doctors and nurses at this year’s conference.
Defibrillators/AEDs
As part of the goal to prevent needless death, Basic Life Support, Newborn Resuscitation is taught by APM Ghana throughout the country. When hospitals or clinics can send sufficient personnel to this training, an AED is given to them to enable them to save lives within their hospitals as they lack this equipment.
Sponsor Training Sessions for Hospital in Northern Ghana
The populations of the districts of Northern Ghana are even more underserved medically as those in the southern parts of the country and are challenging for the team to access as well as train. Often the hospitals are so underfunded that they are unable to send teams to any form of additional training. This year APMG has a goal of training both medical and lay personnel in Basic Life support as well as additional training for medical personnel in newborn resuscitation and obstetric emergencies in these underserved districts.
