Diversity & Inclusion at NWS
Friends of NWS recently launched a campaign to raise $50,000 to support the New World Symphony’s programming to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in classical music.
Why we decided to do this? Because we want to have real impact. Currently, only 1.8% of orchestral musicians around the US are Black and 2.5% Latinx. At NWS, we have been making progress increasing the number of Black & Latinx Fellows each season, but there is more to do!
NWS has a long history of developing programs with these goals at the core. For instance, NWS was one of three partners to launch a national initiative aimed at increasing the number of Black and Latinx musicians in American orchestras, which was featured nationally on NBC news this summer.
Last fall, NWS hosted five musicians from Medellín, Colombia, in the first installment of its annual musician exchange program with Iberacademy. And just last week, NWS Percussion Fellows visited Cuba for a unique musical exchange, collaborating with musicians from Havana's Universidad de las Artes.
