The symbol of the Punisher first came to be associated with the military when Chris Kyle, author of American Sniper, and his unit in Iraq began calling themselves “the Punishers”, after the Marvel Comic character whose mission was to fight evil by all means necessary.

Kyle and his unit spray painted the symbol on their equipment, vehicles, and buildings they entered to let the Iraqis know that they were there and intended to right wrongs. The symbol quickly became used by other units throughout all branches of the military.
