Four Combination Tour Gift Certificates to visit Woodlawn & Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope-Leighey House
Woodlawn is a Federal-style mansion completed in 1805 on land gifted by George Washington to his nephew Lawrence Lewis and step-granddaughter Eleanor "Nelly" Custis Lewis. The estate operated as a plantation where the family enslaved more than ninety people, and later became a free labor colony when sold to Quakers in the 1840s. The Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Pope-Leighey House, built in 1940, is a modest 1,200-square-foot Usonian home that exemplifies Wright's vision for affordable, well-designed middle-class housing. Saved from demolition and relocated to Woodlawn's grounds in the 1960s, it is the only Frank Lloyd Wright home open to the public in the D.C. area. Both properties are owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
