WHITE - Familiar Favorites

  • 2022 Domaine du Chapitre Touraine Sauvignon Blanc - Loire Valley, France
The Domaine du Chapitre Sauvignon Blanc is a bright and crisp Loire Valley white. Notes of lemon curd, lime zest, toasted bread and mineral acidity shine through. The grapes are picked and sorted at the winery in Saint Romain sur Cher. The yields are between 35 and 45 hl/ha. The grapes are cold soaked before pressing and a pneumatic pressing machine is used for all the wines. The wines are lightly filtered and sulfur is added in low quantity before bottling.
  • 2021 Koehler-Ruprecht Riesling Kallstadter Kabinett Trocken - Pfalz, Germany
This historic estate, managed by the legendary and larger than life Bernd Philippi for the last decades and now with the assistance of cellarmaster Dominik Sona, is undoubtedly one of the top estates in the Pfalz. Known for their broad, rich, and minerally rieslings, pinot blancs, and chardonnays sourced from the two top locations in Kallstadt—-the Steinacker and Saumagen vineyards—-these are distinctive and profound wines. The wines are fermented on their own yeasts, mostly in large (1200 liter) neutral stück casks and aged in large old oak barrels when quantities permit and smaller barrels for small production cuvées.  These are old-style wines from an estate making trocken wines before it was trendy - the wines age well and are really best after a few years.
  • 2022 Presqu'ile Winery Chardonnay Santa Barbara County - Santa Barbara, CA
This Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County, California spends eleven months in neutral French oak. The grapes are selected from an array of Dijon clones grown from two vineyards (60% Bien Nacido, 40% Presquile) and handcrafted with minimal intervention. There is no added yeast in the process. The final wine is citrus-driven and bright, marked by supple notes of yellow stone fruit, green apple and minerality. In 2007, after an extensive search that spanned the West Coast of the United States, the Murphy family acquired an unplanted 200-acre property in the hills of the Santa Maria Valley. Over the next two years, the Murphys, along with Santa Barbara County Vineyard Manager Jim Stollberg and Winemaker Dieter Cronje, meticulously planned the design of the Presqu’ile Vineyard with an emphasis on diversity. To achieve their vision, they mapped the site's deep sandy soils, distinct airflows, patterns of sunlight, hillside angles and elevations. With the insights derived from these measurements, they planted the vineyard to maximize the diversity of row directions, spacing, clones and rootstocks.

RED - New Faces

  • 2021 Cardedu Monica di Sardegna Praja - Sardinia, Italy
The local Monica grape is fermented with native yeasts in cavernous cement tanks under the house. A zingy light-bodied red wine. Think spicy-underbrush, herbal notes, and just a touch of fruit. Toasted fregola pasta with small clams, canned sardines, meaty olives.
  • 2019 Pearl Morissette Estate Winery Lincoln Lakeshore Cabernet Sauvignon Furie - Ontario Canada
Practicing organic, hand-harvested and naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts. From Redfoot Vineyard in Lincoln Lakeshore, and harvested on November 10th and fermented as 100% destemmed fruit in large concrete tanks. Fermentation by indigenous yeast proceeded steadily and was completed by mid-December of 2019. It was aged in a combination of concrete and large wooden vessels on lees for a total of eight months. To be sure, this is not a style of Cabernet Sauvignon that you'd normally associate with the grape. Maybe Loire-inspired? Or distinctly Canadian? Either way, it's energetic and feisty and we love it. Francois Morissette is making the most exciting wines in Canada that we know of in his small corner of Ontario. They are uncompromising wines of terroir that easily transcend the boundaries of the Niagara Peninsula; in his words, “I don’t make wine for Ontario, I make wine for the world."
  • 2020 Vina Progreso Overground Collection Tannat Revolution - Uruguay
The Tannat grapes used to craft this wine come from many small plots located within the limits of the Progreso village region in the Canelones department, twenty-five km from the coast. The vines range from ten to twenty years of age and are rooted in clay calcareous soils with a rather high PH that somewhat resemble Burgundian soils. The grapes were macerated in stainless steel for four to six days and fermented in concrete tanks with native and selected yeasts. The wine was aged for three to four months in second-use French and American barrels. The result is a medium-bodied wine with medium acidity. 2020 was an exceptionally good year. They had extraordinary sunlight and a cool and dry summer from beginning to end. The grapes had very good acidity and matching alcohol percentage with very ripe fruit. The celebrated Tannat was first introduced into Uruguay in 1870 by Basque immigrants becoming "the national grape." The grape perfectly adapted to the Uruguayan climate and soil. It is considered an exotic variety and is the most widely planted variety in Uruguay, making it the country's flagship grape varietal. It gives very colorful and powerful wines, with tender but present tannins, which allows the wines to be kept for a long time. Its best wine is rich and vigorous, and it develops great complexity when aged in the bottle. Viña Progreso is a project from 4th generation winemaker, Gabriel Pisano. Gabriel was born in the vineyard, and his personality is that of an explorer. After studying oenology at Uruguayan Vine & Wine School, Gabriel traveled the world learning to make with with world famous winemakers in the famed regions of Sonoma, California; Priorat, Spain and Apalta, Chile. Upon his return to Uruguay, Gabriel brought with him new winemaking techniques and a love for the world’s varietals available outside Uruguay. Uruguay is famous for a varietal called Tannat, which is a bold and structured wine that pairs perfectly with the common Asado. While Gabriel loves this grape and its diversity, he is also experimenting with other varietals such as Sangiovese and Viognier.

RED - Familiar Favorites

  • 2021 Tua Rita Rosso dei Notri - Tuscany, Italy
Grape Varieties: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, SyrahRosso dei Notri aticipes the other wines through the remarkable structure combined with the rich fruits. In 1984 Rita and Virgilio realized their lifelong dream purchasing the property that became Tua Rita. The landscape and buildings on this property were a mere setting for living in contact with nature whilst farming their beloved land. Their overwhelming passion for wine actually changed their plans. Growth has been driven by Rita and Virgilio’s enduring enthusiasm and an ever-deepening awareness of the potential of this estate in the area, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Colline Metallifere, known as Val di Cornia. On one hand the estate and the cellar had been steadily growing, driven by Rita and Virgilio’s extreme commitment. On the other hand, thanks to Stefano Frascolla, married to the owners’ daughter Simena, the winery’s brand awareness was expanding rapidly. Simena also got involved in the family-run business after Virgilio’s death in 2010.
  • 2021 Bow & Arrow Pinot Noir Willamette Valley - Willamette Valley, OR
This is a completely different experience than the Burgundy-inspired norm. It is fresh, it is crunchy, it is a humble 12.5% ABV, and it reminds us of Sancerre Rouge!Bow and Arrow Pinot Noir is a blend of Pinot Noir from Arbre Vert, Chehalem Mountains AVA; Johan, Van Duzer Corridor AVA; Hughes Hollow, and South Salem Hills.
  • 2018 Jonty's Ducks Pekin Red Paarl - Western Cape, South Africa
GRAPE VARIETIES: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Lots of blackcurrants, and liquorice, with a hint of dark chocolate and ground coffee. The wine has an explosion of fruit on the palate and well-integrated, elegant tannins to support it. The layers of fruit and silky finish will leave you wanting more, whilst a lingering aftertaste makes for a rather attractive finish. Made to be enjoyed immediately, but will easily keep for another 7 years. Owner Johnathan Grieve employs a “posse” of ducks, which patrol the vineyard looking for and destroying snails, which eat the vines. The ducks are an eco-friendly way to avoid using harmful chemical poisons to kill pests and act as the guardians of the vines on Avondale.
