Since opening in 2017, Congaree Golf Club has been one of those courses that holds a certain lore in the golf world—many have heard, but few have seen. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Tom Fazio design debuted as Golf Digest’s “Best New Private Course” in 2018, recently was announced at No. 39 on Golf Digest’s 2021 “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” rankings, is ranked #2 course in SC and was home of the 2021 Palmetto Championship and Home of the 2022 CJ Cup!

Nestled on an historic 18th-century estate, and surrounded by more than 2,000 acres of fishing lakes and longleaf pine forests in South Carolina’s scenic Lowcountry, Congaree is a world-class golf club with a philanthropic mission at its core. Renowned architect Tom Fazio designed the championship course to seamlessly embrace its natural surroundings and exude the spirit of Heartland courses found in Britain.

The fairways at Congaree lie within a 3,200 acre property dotted with longleaf pine and bottomland hardwood forests, occupying what was once an 18th century rice plantation. The golf course is considered to be among Tom Fazio's best designs every, in the conversation with Wade Hampton, Shadow Creek and Victoria National. It features 7,850 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 course.  

But what makes Congaree truly special is its founding purpose – to bring together like-minded ambassadors, providing resources for educational and vocational opportunities to underserved and ambitious youths through a shared passion for golf.  There’s a Congaree Foundation and just two `members’ of the club – Dan and Bob. Everybody else is an invited ambassador. And they’re invited in on an annual basis to come in and commit.  The membership process is old-fashioned: by referral only. And while there is no initiation fee, Congaree’s “ambassadors,” as they’re called, are encouraged to not only make a financial contribution to the charitable Congaree Foundation that’s separate from the club, but to take an active role in interacting with youth and sharing their life experiences, both good and bad.

To be sure, this isn’t a local country club where you set up a usual Saturday morning tee time.

Congaree is a walking golf course.
