CHORUS

Throughout the Festival’s 48-year history, the Spoleto Festival USA Chorus has delivered exceptional choral performance, but it is only within the last three seasons that the Chorus has endeavored a new feat—constructing a roster from scratch each season. Building upon the Festival’s longstanding tradition of exceptional choral music, the Chorus aligns with the Festival’s mission to further the artistic advancement of young professional performers expanding its vision to attract and present a broad spectrum of singers.

Spearheaded by Spoleto Festival USA’s Director of Choral Activities, Joe Miller, alongside the Festival’s production team, each season, a months-long audition process is held to scout the most talented young singers from the United States and across the globe. The choral team has the incredibly rewarding task of auditioning each and every singer to build their unique roster that best serves the needs of the Festival. As a result, the Spoleto Festival USA Chorus takes on a dynamic new identity each season, which reflects the diverse scope of artistry, versatility, and musicianship of its members.

Over the course of the Festival, vocal fellows perform major works in 1-3 choral performances across the Festival, perform as the chorus for Spoleto’s mainstage opera, and take part in special performance projects. In 2024, the diverse and multi-faceted group will engage in a vast array of experiences including performing cover roles in the world premier opera Ruinous Gods, alongside the Orchestra in Haydn’s The Creation, alongside chamber musicians in the 2024 Bank of America Chamber Music series, and even under candlelight at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul performing Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry, Josquin des Prez’s The Woman with the Alabaster Box, and Schutz’s iconic St. Matthew Passion.

We invite you to join us as the 2024 Spoleto Festival USA Chorus embarks on an incredible musical and performative journey this season.

ORCHESTRA

Each season, the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra assumes a different identity by welcoming a range of returning and new musicians, selected through nationwide auditions. The result is an extremely talented and diverse group of emerging professionals from around the globe, chosen specifically to perform each season’s broad spectrum of repertoire. To prepare for such a dynamic series of opera, symphonic, choral, chamber, and contemporary music performances, the musicians work with Music Director of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, Timothy Myers, as well as the season’s visiting guest conductors and composers. Joining the Orchestra offers invaluable opportunities for young artists entering the field.

Over the course of the Festival, the Orchestra engages in a tremendously broad range of activities, one of the uniquities of the experience of a Festival Orchestra musician. In the 2024 Festival, the Orchestra performs in pit for the world premiere of Layale Chaker and Lisa Schlesinger's Ruinous Gods and Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet Suite with the L.A. Dance Project, partners with the Festival Chorus for Haydn’s The Creation and Aoife O'Donovan in a performance of her new album All My Friends, and performs two major symphonic programs including the world premiere cello concerto Had to Be by Nathalie Joachim featuring Seth Parker Woods, Mahler's vast Fifth Symphony, Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, and Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Festival favorite Inon Barnatan. Through the Tell Your Story project, an innovative community engagement project, emerging composers from the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra are paired with community partners to create sonic memoirs through vocal recordings and sounds inspired by their memories and cultures. This season, in collaboration with We are Family and Charleston Jewish Federation, the Festival will preserve and share historically underrepresented stories during the 17-day Festival and beyond.

We welcome you warmly as you join the journey that is the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra.
