“Sunset Farm was inspired, like most of my paintings, by the South Dakota landscape that surrounds me. This colorful sunset covered the sky west of Brookings on a summer evening and provided several opportunities for photos. When I paint landscapes, the sky always comes first because it has so much impact on the whole painting. Working from dark to light helps me achieve the light and dark contrast that is so important to me. I love to spread thick oil paint on canvas.”
Karen Kinder grew up on the prairies of South Dakota, and they continue to be an inspiration. Her paintings showcase the natural beauty of the prairie in a blend of familiar earthy tones and more vibrant hues. “I grew up seeing the horizon and watching the changing skies moving east to west across the hills and fields. I’ve long since left the farm, but it hasn’t left me. I continue to look for horizons, clouds, fields, and especially . . . sheep! I love to show them in light and shadow with lots of color. I love oils and painting with quick strokes of thick paint.”
