After graduation I was drafted into the Army where I worked as an illustrator. After receiving an MA and MFA from the State University of lowa, I moved to Detroit in 1966 and began teaching Life Drawing and Anatomy at Wayne State University. In 1975 I received a years sabbatical and moved to New York City, where I maintained a studio for the next 8 years. In 1976 | returned to Detroit to teach and work, but commuted back and forth to NYC. I began showing at the Allan Stone Gallery in 1976 and took a leave from WSU between 1977 and 1978 while Allan Stone supported me in NYC. Dennis Barrie produced the film "John Hegarty" that was commissioned by the Archives of American Art, Bureau of the Smithsonian and first shown at the DIA in 1983. That same year I received The Michigan Foundation for the Arts Award in Visual Arts and left New York and moved my studio back to Detroit.
