Manifest, 2019

Oil on canvas

24 x 24 inches

“The imagery in this piece is inspired by a dilapidated billboard advert for an album by Philthy Rich, an East Oakland-born rapper,” explains Lauren Szabo of Manifest. “I am interested in what the image provokes when recontextualized in relation to contemporary themes and Oakland culture, and how contemporary advertisements may be subverted into new iconographies when removed from their original source.” Manifest was created at the request of SFMOMA Artists Gallery for an exhibition at Fort Mason Center for the Arts.

Exhibition History and Collections: Szabo’s work has been included in exhibitions at the de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA; SFMOMA Artists Gallery, San Francisco, CA; 111 Minna Gallery, San Francisco, CA; the Berkeley Art Center, Berkeley, CA, and Joyce Gordon Gallery, Oakland, CA, among others. Her work has also been exhibited internationally and is in private collections in Europe, South Africa, and the United States.

Awards and Credentials: Szabo is a two-time Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant recipient for her solo exhibitions. She received a BFA with distinction in Illustration from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA, and an MFA Fellowship for graduate study in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA.

Szabo was MarinMOCA’s Artist-in-Residence in 2022, culminating in a solo exhibition, Lauren Jade Szabo: Be Like Water. Szabo is a MarinMOCA artist member.
