Over the course of her career, Isabella Kirkland has created an exquisite visual record of the world’s biodiversity, painted in the style of Dutch Baroque masters. She advocates for all creatures, particularly those at risk, and she recently became captivated by squat lobsters. These brightly colored crustaceans are found at every depth of every ocean, but sadly, they are one of the largest bycatch creatures of the ocean. Many thousands are caught in the process of fishing only to be thrown out because we do not eat them. In Kirkland’s hands, these castaway species are elevated and celebrated for their sculptural intricacy and physical diversity.
