“In many mythologies, dogs, brave and sympathetic, are seen as guides and protectors from the perils of danger, negative spirits, and inevitable mortality,” writes Jeff Downing of works like Glacier, a sculpture dedicated to one of his signature subjects. “As I investigate these mythologies in my work, the strange and beautiful canine has become an allegory of how I attempt to make sense of human culture and our vast disconnect with the natural and mystical world.”

Exhibition History and Collections: Downing’s work has been exhibited in Brazil, Mexico, Europe, and the United States, and his work is featured in museum collections, public art venues, and private art collections throughout the world.

Credentials: Downing received an MFA from San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA. Downing is currently in his 25th year as a Professor of Art and Head of the Ceramics Area at San Francisco State University.

Downing was MarinMOCA’s Artist-in-Residence in 2020, and during that time he created three public installations addressing sea level rise. He curated the MarinMOCA exhibition Continuous Clay: Trends and Innovations, July 24 – September 25, 2021.
