A southeastern US native chestnut that is resistant to chestnut blight. A thicket forming large shrub or tree in full sun. The edible nuts are delicious but small and a little hard to harvest which is why it is not a commercial crop. The nuts are popular with wildlife too such as squirrels, chipmunks, opossums, bears, deer, blue jays, and woodpeckers. Four inch long, narrow, male catkins appear along the stems in summer and pollinate the female flowers on other plants (not self-compatible) that mature into round spiny fruits in fall.
