Learn about advanced diving technology, the legacy of Dr. John E. “Jack” Randall, and what it takes to manage one of the most complete and important collections of coral reef fishes in the world. Join Dr. Richard L. Pyle, Senior Curator of Ichthyology, along with Brian D. Greene, Ichthyology Research Specialist, for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum’s collection, which was originally founded in 1889. This collection includes over 100,000 fish specimens, thanks to the amazing career of Dr. Randall (1924-2020), who is widely regarded as one of the greatest ichthyologists in history. Jack was so successful in his career because he began at the dawn of SCUBA technology, and was the first to use it to explore coral reefs during his extensive travels throughout the vast Indo-Pacific region. Dr. Pyle and Mr. Greene have continued this legacy by pioneering the use of advanced diving technology to explore coral reefs below the depths accessed by conventional SCUBA.
