Army Captain Alejandro Villanueva graduated from the United States Military Academy ("West Point") in 2010. Shortly after, he was commissioned into the Army as an Infantry officer. in turn, he was selected to attend Airborne and Ranger school, all while stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing these schools, he was assigned as a platoon leader at the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, at Fort Drum. He deployed to Afghanistan for one year with 10th Mountain in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for rescuing wounded soldiers under enemy fire.
Following deployment, 1LT Villanueva volunteered for the 75th Ranger Regiments Ranger Orientation Program in 2013 - shortly after, he was assigned to the 1st Ranger Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia as a platoon leader, plans, and executive officer. He would redeploy with the 1/75 to Afghanistan for another eight months and was again awarded another Bronze Star with Valor for his heroic actions.
Following military service, CPT Villanueva participated in the 2014 regional NFL Combine in Georgia. He was one of 240 prospects to be invited to attend the 2014 National NFL Combine in Detroit and met with scouts from the Philadelphia Eagles where he would sign on in May 2014 as a defensive end. Later on, in 2014, he was waived by the Eagles and picked up by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played until 2020. Villanueva made waves during the 2017 season about the NFL National Anthem Controversy. Before a game on September 24, 2017, against the Chicago Bears, the entire Pittsburgh Steelers team refused to take the field during the playing of the anthem in protest. Villanueva was the lone member of the Steelers to appear publicly for the national anthem, standing in front of the entrance tunnel for the performance while the rest of the team remained in the tunnel. As a result of this, Villanueva's jersey became the top-selling jersey on the NFL's official store in the 24 hours after Sunday's games started.
This Jersey is a Steelers black and yellow replica, with the numbers patterned with the American Flag with Ranger Villanuevas' signature in the middle, authenticated by JSA.
