Louise Stanley (1942) is best known for her humorous narrative style, inspired by Western Art history and Greek mythology. The human condition, modern day romance, and political issues are often explored. Her paintings are filled with lush color and rich, historically-accurate references. Since the beginning of her career in the 1970s, Stanley has tackled many of the thorny issues of our time, including gender inequality, corporate malfeasance, social justice, and all-around bad behavior. Given the current socio-political environment, her bold work, which treats difficult subjects with wit and insight, resonates strongly.

Stanley studied with Peter Saul and was heavily influenced by H. C. Westermann. She became involved in the Women’s Movement in the 1970s and 1980s, and began teaching, lecturing, and presenting her work across the country with solo exhibitions at PS1 MOMA and UC Berkeley’s Matrix series, among many others. Her work is in the collections of SFMOMA, San Jose Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of California, and Yale University, among others. She holds a MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and is represented by Anglim/Trimble, San Francisco.
