About the Artist: Ann Matlock
Ann Matlock is a watercolorist and a weaver of silk tapestries whose work is included in private and public collections in the United States and Europe. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in Texas and other states. She supported herself for over twenty years with the sale of her work, commissions, and occasional workshop teaching. She was also a university art professor for 21 years, teaching at Ohio University, and then at Lamar University in Texas, retiring in 2016.
The tapestries of Ann Matlock have been featured in articles in many periodicals devoted to textiles, as well as in more general interest publications. A video about her weaving process, “Ann Matlock - Cloth of the World ”, was made in 2012 by a filmmaker and professor at Lamar University. She has written for many of the publications in the field of contemporary textiles and crafts. Her work has also been supported by grants from universities, artist groups, and, in the case of the Dobie - Paisano Fellowship, by the Texas Institute of Letters.
Her designs are usually abstracted from watercolors, drawings, and photographs of the natural world and architecture. Ann spins most of her silk wefts and dyes all of her yarns. She has taught most of the unique processes that she has developed over 50 years of weaving in workshops at universities and craft schools. She lectures and judges exhibitions of contemporary crafts and is now is at work on a series of new tapestries for exhibition.
Most of all, Ann is grateful for the beauty of the hill country, where she has lived since the early 1970’s. The Hill Country Alliance is one of the most important organizations working to preserve this very special place, and should be supported by all of us.
