Celebrating our Founding Collections—Nā Aliʻi Wahine: Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani, and Queen Emma Kaleleonālani.

A behind-the-scenes tour with Ethnology and Library & Archives of our founding collections of the aliʻi wahine Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani, and Queen Emma Kaleleonālani. Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in honor of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. The Museum was established to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian objects and royal family heirlooms of the Princess, along with collections from Princess Ruth and Queen Emma, together known as the Founding Collections. This behind-the-scenes tour of Ethnology and Library & Archives will highlight special items from these three collections, which speak to the women’s personalities and personal commitments to preserving Hawaiian culture.
