Stories of amazing saves in 2024!

With your support Wild Blue Cats! has touched the lives of almost 12,000 kitties!

Here are a few of the great saves from 2024

BlackjackIn July, we received a desperate call from the owner of a barn kitty asking for help because “something was wrong with his kitty's mouth” and maybe he had been hit by a car. On intake we realized quickly this was a severe injury, which a quick x-ray showed to be a shattered jaw from a gunshot wound! With the rapid support of our great donors, like you, we were able to get Blackjack into specialists who worked for over 6 hours to repair his jaw, tongue, punctured palate, and shattered teeth. Six weeks later he was fully healed, has a little bit of a crooked smile, and went to his forever home a happy and healthy kitty!

Xiamen

Xiamen came to us in May from a colony of cats that had gotten a bit out of hand. He was surrendered with 33 other cats including 2 pregnant cats who had 5 kittens each in foster care! On exam he was found to have a serious heart issue and was brought to see a specialist at Colorado State University. The doctors determined he needed open heart surgery to correct a birth defect that would kill him if not fixed immediately. He underwent open heart surgery and came through with flying colors! He found his forever home in July! When large inbred colonies come into us we are faced with multiple genetic issues that many rescues wouldn’t try to fix! Thanks to your support kittens like Xiamen get a chance at life!

Kite AKA Hissy Miss

In March we were asked to help trap and relocate 3 cats from the bird sanctuary in Roswell, NM. Kite was one of those feral kitties who was routinely spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and found a great new home in a barn in Colorado. Then in July we got a panicked call from her new owner, they were in the Veterinary ER and Kite was dying from FIP. Our amazing team sprang into action taking the much-needed medications to the ER to save Kite’s life. She was given the medications right after her heart stopped and they performed CPR to revive her and were successful in bringing her back from death! Our team took over her care as this feral kitty was going to require 118 days straight of medication to fight the FIP virus from her system. Since the owner was not going to be able to administer medications to a feral cat, our barn cat professional took Kite home and nursed her through the long process of clearing FIP out of her body. Over time Kite became semi friendly feral then by the end of treatment she was playing and allowing petting. Kite went home in October and will still need 6 months of observation by her very grateful owners. FIP used to be a death sentence for any cat who contracted it, but now it’s curable and kitties can live great lives after but the cost of medication is extremely high, for Kite alone costs were well over $5600 in medications and blood tests.

Pinion

Pinion came to us in July via a foster for Paws N Hooves, another Colorado based rescue. She had found mom and 2 kittens in her outbuilding. Pinion’s rear leg was trapped in a mousetrap she had set not knowing that there were cats were in the building. Pinion’s leg was 4x the size of the other and cold indicating blood flow had been cut off for a long time. We were hopeful that she would recover but it soon became clear the trap had been on her leg too long and the lower half of her leg was dying. She underwent amputation surgery and is a happy, healthy 3-legged kitty now! She was adopted in September.

The "H" Kitties

We are sometimes called in to help with multiple cats due to owners going into hospice or passing away. These kitties, by no fault of the elderly owners, have generally not had any medical care for years due to their owners own failing health. Wild Blue Cats took in one such group of kitties this summer. There was a total of 13 indoor cats and 7 barn cats all with different levels of care needed from simple updating of vaccines and shaving off of matted fur to full dental work, weight loss programs, skin cancer removal, and a host of other large to small issues. 6 of these kitties are still under Wild Blue Cats care, two are adoptable and the other 4 are still working through medical care. Stop by to meet all the beautiful souls looking for their new forever home.

Hummer

Hummer was found in Roswell Animal Services this October when we were down in Roswell, NM doing a spay and neuter clinic for the community. He was a super friendly kitty wanting to be pet through the cage, except we quickly realized he had no eyes. Our veterinarian checked him out and realized he was born with under developed eyes and had been blind since birth. She removed his non-functioning eyes and stitched his eyelids closed. He is a super friendly kitty who is now ready for his forever home! Blind kitties find their way into shelters frequently, we also have Narin waiting for her forever home! Come down to Wild Blue Cats to meet these amazing kitties in person.

Arabian AKA Bean Sprout

Arabian was born in foster care to sister moms from Log Lane Village, CO. They were living under a trailer and were trapped during a TNR weekend. Arabian’s foster started noticing his chest was not forming correctly. An exam by our veterinarian confirmed that Arabian was born with a very rare birth defect called pectus excavatum, or flat chested syndrome, where the ribs and sternum grow curved inwards instead of out around the lungs and heart. He needed immediate surgery to correct the condition or he would die due to compression of his heart, lungs, and esophagus. Again, Colorado State University came to the rescue and placed a breast plate attached to his ribcage to slowly pull his ribs into the correct shape. His surgery was successful and after many weeks he had a proper shaped chest - thank to the corrective plate attached to his ribs. When the plate was removed, he was hard to contain because he could finally breathe and move like a normal kitten!! He was adopted by a friend of his foster family so they can stay in touch and visit him!

We also conduct Trap, Neuter, and Release (TNR) ventures outside city limits, while supporting TNR efforts inside city limits to the best of our capacity. 100% of the cats we help are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and, when not feral, micro-chipped.

Wild Blue Cats! is a no-kill rescue as well as a network partner of  Best Friends Animal Society  Best Friends and Wild Blue are committed to the goal of #NoKill2025.  No-Kill 2025 means that every shelter in our country is getting the community support it needs to save every dog and cat who can be saved. When a shelter is saving at least 90% of the dogs and cats entering, that shelter is designated as No-Kill. Animal shelters, rescues, lifesaving groups, and individual community members working together to take collective responsibility for at-risk pets right where they live.

Wild Blue takes the goal of No-Kill 2025 to heart as demonstrated by our lifesaving efforts in Colorado and surrounding states. As of September 30th, 2024, Wild Blue Cats! has saved or impacted the precious lives of over 11,550 cats and kittens.
