About us

       Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc.

Serving the Matsu Senior Community for over 40 years

WASI is pleased to have been voted “Best of the Valley” for the past eight years running!

The Wasilla Senior Center was founded in 1978 as an activity center. In 1981, Frank Smith donated land and Wasilla Senior Center was relocated, to its current location, and incorporated as Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc (WASI). The building itself was named the Floyd D. Smith Community Center, in loving memory of Frank Smith’s father.  Today, in keeping with our mission, WASI provides services and resources to promote health and independence for all Seniors.

Nutrition Program

WASI provides a well-balanced, delicious lunches Monday thru Friday from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. All meals consist of soup, entrée, vegetables, salad, and dessert.  Meals are served in our dinning room at WASI and Mid-Valley Senior Center. We can even help seniors get to WASI for lunch through our lunch transportation service.

Mat-Su Meals on Wheels: Fresh, delicious meals are delivered to homebound seniors. This program helps to ensure that no senior goes hungry, and helps individuals to remain in their own home and living independently for as long as possible. With your help we can continue to provide a daily wellness check by our staff and trained volunteers. The Meals on Wheels program is currently on track to deliver over 120,000 meals, which is a 41% increase from last year.

In-Home Services:

WASI offers affordable assistance in Senior’s homes, providing housekeeping and other chore services, and respite care when family members don’t want to leave frail elderly alone, but need to be away. As with other WASI programs, these services are made affordable, even for low-income seniors, through our sliding fee scale. Call 907-206-8794 for more information.

Goals

Our goal is to raise $25,000 to support WASI, programs like Meals on Wheels are so needed in our community, we are currently on track to deliver over 120,000 meals, which is a 41% increase from last year.  With your help, we can continue to provide a daily wellness check by our staff and trained volunteers. Besides a daily meal, this greatly-needed human connection is a lifeline for a lonely and sometimes forgotten group. Whether it is because of income, lack of mobility, or social or cognitive roadblocks, for many, Meals on Wheels is an integral part of their diet, budget, and social life. It may be the only full meal they get in a day. It really is that important.  Together we can deliver!

Pie-It-Forward Fundraiser

Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc. is gearing up for our second Pie-It-Forward Fundraiser. Last year with community support, we had a very successful fundraiser event. In addition, we were able to deliver delicious pies during the Thanksgiving holiday to seniors in our programs.

Our mission at Wasilla Area Seniors, Inc. is to provide for the lives of seniors in the Mat-Su Valley by enabling seniors to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Programs like our like Meals on Wheels helps seniors live independently at home. Our Nutrition department served 115,161 FY21, in comparison to 85,096 FY20, at the current rate we forecast the number of meals at the end of FY22 will reach over 120,000.  The Nutrition Program includes congregate meals at both the Wasilla Senior Center and Mid-Valley Senior center as well as Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors.  During our first quarter we have already served 32,613 meals to 718 seniors this is significant increase in comparing previous years. In addition, our bus has provided 1,001 rides for seniors to have a congregate lunch or to go on the weekly shopping shuttle.  The need for our services continues to increase as well as the costs to providing those services. Help us help seniors and Pie-It-Forward.
