Clinton Rotary projects serving local children and youth include:

Backpack Buddies

Food insecurity is harmful to children:  children who don’t have enough food lack energy, are sick more often, recover slower, have impaired cognitive development, find it harder to handle complicated social situations, and are less able to concentrate and perform at school.

Rotary helps fund the Backpack Buddy program, which provides backpacks full of kid-friendly, pre-packaged nutritious food each Friday for the weekend, when free and reduced-price breakfasts and lunches at school are not available. Approximately 180 children at risk of hunger from 5 local elementary and middle schools are provided backpacks of food on Friday afternoon before they leave school for the weekend.

Children who are provided food regularly score better on tests, have better memory retention, and show improved learning skills.  It is our goal to improve the educational experience for area children by providing the nutrition necessary to achieve.

Kicks for Kids snow boots for students

Winter is coming and so is snow!  But many children in our area do not have boots to wear outside and to school.  Rotary works with local retailers to provide warm boots for children who need them and delivers them to local schools.

Dictionaries for 3rd graders

A dictionary is a valuable educational resource, even in this day of the internet, computers, and phones. Rotary provides each area third grade student with a dictionary, which includes an atlas, historical notes, and other resources.

Josh the Otter water safety program for kindergarten students

The Josh the Otter program was started by a couple whose small son accidentally drowned in their home pool.  We live along a river so a water safety message is vital for our children.  In a fun and simple way, this Rotary project teaches kids to STAY AWAY FROM WATER UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.  The “Josh the Baby Otter” book was created to help children comprehend and remember this important message. Rotary provides "Josh the Baby Otter" books for every kindergarten child to take home. Together we CAN save lives

Books for the Public Library

Rotary encourages our young children to read by giving books to the Children’s Department of the Clinton Public Library.   Hundreds of books have been provided over the years in honor of those who present programs at Rotary meetings.

Park enhancements

Several City parks have been improved and updated through Clinton Rotary.  These enhancements include new playground equipment and safer play surfaces.  Most notably the club developed Rotary Park near the waterfront and provided much-needed restrooms.

My GEAR supplies for children entering foster care

Often children entering foster care are moved without the ability or time to take even the most basic personal essentials. My GEAR puts together a bundle of necessary supplies so children can have something to call their own and be better handle this major transition in their lives.

Annual scholarships

College or other post-secondary education provides a crucial path to success in life and work.  Still the costs increase every year.  The Clinton Rotary Club annually provides $8,000 – $10,000 in scholarships to area graduating seniors to support their ongoing education.  It is a vital investment in their lives and our community!

Home Run Readers

Research shows that children can lose a significant part of the skills they learn each school year over the summer.  Our Home Run Readers program aims to help children continue to read and learn over the summer and have fun doing so. Through our partnership with the Clinton Lumberkings, we encourage children to hit different reading goals throughout the summer, and offer prizes to the children for reaching each goal.  The grand prize is a free ticket to a Lumberkings game where the children are recognized for the accomplishments.

These are just some of the ways that Rotary Cares for Kids!
