*The first xerographic copy was created in 1938 by physicist Chester Carlson by combining two fundamental concepts: materials with opposite electrical charges attract one another, and certain materials conduct electricity better after being exposed to light. Met with little interest, Carlson persevered knowing xerography was the "key to a tremendous new industry." Twenty years later, the first copier was unveiled.

AUCTION RULES

Please read the following conditions of sale carefully.

 General Rules

Regarding the event auction, the Museum of Craft and Design assumes no risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity, quality, or value of the items. Descriptions are made based on information provided by artists/makers/designer and/or donors. Estimates of values and descriptions have been made in good faith based on fair market value. Everything is sold “as is”. The Museum of Craft and Design reserves the right to withdraw any item at any time before the actual sale.

Advance Online Bidding

MCD is pleased to partner with ClickBid to offer advance bidding on all objects and experiences in our live and silent auctions. Advance bidding is available online November 8 through November 22 at 12:00 PM (PST). Registered online bidders are invited to bid either incrementally or by entering a maximum bid through which Clickbid will bid by proxy on your behalf (but never exceeding) your maximum bid. When advance bidding closes, you will receive notification and an invitation to continue bidding as an absentee bidder, or in person if you are able to attend the event on November 22. All advance bids will be transferred to bid sheets at the November 22 event.

Absentee Bidding

Individuals who are unable to attend the November 22 event may bid remotely in real time at the event on any object or experience in the live and silent auctions. As an absentee bidder, you may either set a maximum bid through which MCD will proxy bid on your behalf, or bid by phone with a MCD staff member.

Bidding At The Event

Upon check-in, prospective bidders must pre-register with a credit card to obtain a bid number that will serve as your bidding paddle. Any bids placed in advance online will be synced with bids at the event.

Bidder Numbers

Each registered guest has been pre-assigned a bidder number. All sales are recorded and tracked by the bidder number, which will appear on the back of your event program. Use this number when placing a bid in the silent auction or to make a paddle raise donation.

Silent Auction

Any bids placed in advance online will be synced with bids at the event. Bid sheets will be prominently displayed near each item. Minimum bids will be recorded on the bid sheet. You may not bid below the minimum bid. To bid in the silent auction, write your last name and bidder number next to the amount that you wish to bid. Please use the incremental amounts specified on the bidding sheets. Bids that do not use these amounts will not be honored. If you choose the “Buy Now” amount at the bottom of the bid sheet, no other bids will be accepted. Designation of your bid as the winning bid is a legal contract to purchase the item. The event Auctioneer will call the close of all silent auction lots at the November 22 event.

Payment + Procedures

At the close of the event, payment must be processed and received for all purchases. In the event that you are not in attendance and are otherwise unable to take your artwork home on auction night, we will automatically charge the credit card on file and call you within 72 hours to confirm purchase. Purchases may be paid for with cash, personal checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. All sales are final and accounts must be settled by the close of the auction. Sales tax will be applied to all in-state purchases.

Successful bidders are purchasers of items of value. As such, the bids are not tax-deductible except in the amount by which the purchase price exceeds the item’s fair market value. This amount, if any, appears on your invoice. Please keep your invoice for your records and consult with your tax advisor for details.

Pick-Up

Please present your paid receipt to receive items purchased. Works of art will be packed for transport, if possible. Please note: MCD staff will be packing and moving all of the items sold. You may experience a brief delay in receiving your purchase. Please be patient. If you do not live locally, the Museum of Craft and Design can ship your item(s) to you. A nominal shipping fee will be applied for purchased works requiring delivery after the event.
