About Horizons

Horizons at Foote advances educational equity through a robust academic and enrichment program that builds on long-term partnerships with families and communities to provide a joyful, safe, and inspiring learning environment that empowers students from New Haven schools to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Horizons K-8 students attend a six-week summer program on the campus of The Foote School and receive additional support throughout the year. Our project-based educational model is designed to fuel a lifelong passion for learning, blending high-quality academics with cultural enrichment and confidence-building activities like swimming, arts, and sports.

About the Authors

Australian-born Geraldine Brooks grew up in Sydney. She worked as a reporter for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Wall Street Journal, where she covered crises in the mideast, Africa and the Balkans. In 2016, she was named an Officer in the Order of Australia.

Geraldine was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 2006 for her second novel, March. She is also the author of international best-sellers Caleb’s Crossing, People of the Book, and Year of Wonders. Her upcoming novel Horse - a story of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism - debuts in June 2022.

Abdul-Razak Zachariah is a 2017 Yale graduate and author of The Night is Yours, an empowering picture book about a nighttime hide-and-seek game that celebrates blackness and self-confidence, based on Abdul's childhood in New Haven.

Abdul is currently in the Master’s program at Harvard with a focus on community development and education, having previously worked at LEAP. He is interested in how archives, the arts, public space, and cultural programming support communities in building collective solidarity and developing vibrant, liberatory neighborhoods in their image.

Autographed copies of Geraldine Brook's upcoming novel Horse and Abdul-Razak Zachariah's The Night is Yours are available for purchase. Thanks to our generous book partner RJ Julia, a portion of the proceeds will directly benefit Horizons at Foote. Both books will be shipped in June 2022.
