WHY DONATE

Need for a Baler and Forklift

We are now fundraising to purchase a baler and forklift! This year we simplified the sorting process and improved our systems to shred fabric scraps. At all our sorting tables, we're now (re)using old FABSCRAP service bags and reusable bins for all fabric categories. It significantly reduces our use of plastic bags! They're now only used for paper and trash! Full FABSCRAP bags are emptied into large cardboard boxes, called gaylords, on pallets. These can hold up to 750lbs of material each and are easily moved with a pallet jack. We fill a truck with 10-20 gaylords to deliver to our shredder every month! The gaylords are great, but they are EXPENSIVE. The next step is to get a baler, to create bales of fabric scraps, and a forklift, so we can lift the bales! We can fit 2x, potentially 3x, as much material into a truck to the shredder.

Need to Scale to Meet Immediate Demand

FABSCRAP’s three-pronged approach makes the organization a service, resource, and community. Within the current service area, there is more brand demand for service than we have capacity to address. Material sells as soon as it is made available, so more space and hands could aid in merchandizing and redistribution. Lastly, there is an incredible need for data-driven sustainability education that FABSCRAP can expand.

Tackle the Third R: Reduction

FABSCRAP has successfully addressed the need for recycling and reuse but is also focused on textile waste reduction. With its unique position in the industry and well-established data set, FABSCRAP can create a sustainability guide for the production and use of fabric headers and swatch cards that can dramatically reduce waste in the fabric sampling supply chain.

AUCTION TIPS

*Bids are tax-deductible, so long as they’re above an item’s fair market value. Please remember that the amount over the listed fair market value of any particular prize is tax-deductible. For example, if your winning bid is $100 for a $60 item, your tax-deductible donation is $40.

*If you’d like to make a standard donation in addition to bidding, you’ll see "Item 100" for that too. Help us meet our goal of $7,000 in celebration of our 7th Anniversary!

*At the end of the auction, we’ll be in touch if you’ve won an item and to arrange payment. You’ll be able to choose whether you’d like to pick up your item at the FABSCRAP Warehouse in Brooklyn or have it shipped to you directly. Many of our prizes are digital gift cards or certificates. In those cases, we will email you a copy.

*If a bid or donation is not possible for you right now, there are other ways you can help! Perhaps one of the most helpful things you can do is share the link to our auction with your community of family, friends, neighbors, followers and colleagues. You never know who might be interested in our auction prizes and/or supporting our mission!
