The 33rd Annual

A TRADITION TO END HUNGER:

In 1990, a Michigan high school art teacher created a way for his students to raise funds for their local food bank. As a class project, students made clay bowls for a fundraising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup & bread and were gifted a hand crafted bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world. The following year, the concept developed into Empty Bowls, a project to support food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. For the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and so many other food banks across the country, this has become a signature fundraising event.

About the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan

About Us

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan serves as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor of food to member non-profit and charitable organizations in 22 counties. Once food arrives at the Food Bank, it is sorted, inspected and made available to partner agencies such as churches, soup kitchens, and food pantries to distribute to those in need.  All Food Bank partner agencies are required to distribute food, without charges or fees, to needy clients.

Grassroots

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan began in 1981 as a small, grassroots community organization serving agencies in Genesee County. Due to the ever-increasing need for our services, the Food Bank has grown to serve more than 700 hunger relief partners throughout 22 eastern Michigan counties. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is one of seven food banks in the state.
