The Mercer County Chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS Mercer) was founded by a group of educators and concerned citizens, including then Trenton Mayor Arthur J. Holland, the Rev. SS. Howard Woodson Jr., Gerald R. Stockman (president), J. Wilson Noden, and Mary G. Roebling, among others. Their goal was to serve and support local at-risk youth who were losing their way in turbulent times, many of whom were impoverished and living in single-parent homes.
Fashioned after, and affiliated with the national, award-winning agency of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (which was founded in 1904), BBBS-Mercer remains, nearly a half-century later, as vital a part of the social service structure of Mercer County as it was when it was founded, now serving more than 600 children annually, prior to the pandemic. Since 2002, when Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County (BBBS-Mercer) was reconfigured and reincorporated, BBBS-Mercer has positively impacted the lives of over 8,000 (and counting) at-risk children in Mercer County.
Thank you to our wonderful sponsors! We could not serve the hundreds of youths in our programs without your support!
