10th Annual Jacob Ranton Memorial Tournament and Online Auction

About This Event

Family, Friends, and our Community Supporters,

We hope that you and your families have had a wonderful and safe year. It is hard to believe that the 10th Annual Jacob Ranton Memorial Basketball Tournament in support of the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council (www.wrspc.ca) is coming up fast. This year’s edition will feature 32 of the top high school teams from Ontario and Newfoundland. The tournament will be December 13th and 14th and will be based out of Waterloo Collegiate, with 7 other sites across Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge to accommodate this many teams.

It is with a lot of emotion that we announce that this will be our last fundraising drive for WRSPC in conjunction with the tournament. In the 10 years since we have lost Jacob, this fundraiser and tournament have been a huge part of our grieving process. On October 24th, Jacob would be 30 years old. The number 10 was his jersey number. As well, our family, friends and the community have supported us through these difficult 10 years emotionally, spiritually, and in our fundraising efforts for WRSPC. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us get here. Because of your love and support, we feel that we can tackle his birthday, the anniversary of his death, and Christmas without having a diversion to help us through these times. We will continue to support, volunteer, and be involved with the incredible work that the Council does to reduce the impact of suicide in our community, and we hope that you will as well. We also look forward to watching great basketball in the future, as Dan Nelson and the organizing team will continue to run the basketball portion of this event in Jacob’s name.

We will also be continuing our tradition of bringing in an inspirational speaker to share their journey with the athletes. This year’s speaker, Marke Freeman, is a former professional basketball player, coach, author, broadcaster, and inspiring leader. She will bring her messaging that will help our athletes grow, improve and thrive. Please join us on December 13th at 10am at Waterloo Collegiate to hear this incredible young woman. Come early as public seating will be limited. Her talk will challenge the students and athletes to welcome challenges as opportunities, becoming the “captains of their ship”.

We hope to make the 10th the biggest and best fundraiser yet! Because of you, we have raised over $422,000 for the WRSPC.

Today, more than ever, our mental health is of utmost importance and the work of the WRSPC is even more critical. Through education, training, community engagement, and positive life promotion messaging, the Council is reducing the impact of suicide on our community and beyond. We would really appreciate it if you would consider donating to this wonderful organization via this link

Please continue to give Jacob a voice by talking with your loved ones about their own mental health, and please understand that you are not alone.

Looking forward to seeing you in December,

Love you to the moon, Jacob!
