With a background in literature and classical Indian dance, Ashwini Bhat (b. 1980) works at the intersection of sculpture, ceramics, installation, video, and performance. She radically recasts familiar forms to suggest a complex interplay between landscape, the human, and the non-human. In Beginning is the End is the Beginning (2019), Bhat uses coiled, knotted, and snake-like forms to explore oppositional concepts, linear and cyclical time, interior and exterior space, closed and open forms, and solid and fluid states. Bhat wants to draw the viewer’s attention to moments of transition.

After thirty-five years in Southern India, Bhat currently lives and works in the Bay Area. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in the public collections of the Newport Art Museum, Watson Institute at Brown University, Providence, New Bedford Historical Society, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan, FuLe International Ceramic Art Museum, China, and Daugavpils Mark Rothko Centre, Latvia. Bhat has been the recipient of the Howard Foundation Award for Sculpture, Pond Farm Julia Terr Fellowship (BIPOC Artists), and the McKnight Foundation Residency Fellowship.
