A suckering shrub with upright shoots straight from ground level with limited branching. This plant is grown for its large, heart-shaped leaves that open vivid pink, changing through pale pink, cream and pale green to mid-green, then turning red and yellow in autumn. A dioecious species with insignificant flowers, the male plants produce curious rounded clusters of tiny, red flowers along the stems in summer. Female plants produce terminal flower clusters.
